APRIL 8TH – MAY 13TH 2022
Earth Works Exhibition at Webster University’s Cecille R. Hunt Gallery
Earth Works Show Card_Hunt Gallery
The exhibition Earth Works for April 8 – May 13, 2022, a title which is obviously a riff on Robert Smithson’s Earthworks, will highlight recent artists who are using the environment as image or material rather than the subjects of manipulation of earth or necessarily environmental impact/devastation. Curated by Dr. Jeffrey Hughes, Earth Works includes drawings/paintings, photos, and video works by: Kim Anderson (Bradenton, FL), Abbey Hepner (Edwardsville, IL), Cristina Molina (New Orleans, LA), Molly Segal, (Oakland, CA), Janaina Tschäpe (New York, NY), and John Ruppert (Baltimore, MD).

Energy Illuminations
Energy Illuminations is a collection of lamps made with bioluminescent materials that are activated when energy-related keywords appear on Twitter and Google. These biological light sources are only lit when the energy conversation is active. The lamps are triggered in real time, allowing viewers to contribute to the virtual conversations and witness the result. Algae are a source of remediation for radionuclides so Energy Illuminations comments on the biological resiliency as well as the potential of biolights in the future.

Abbey will be presenting the project Temporary Container at the Society For Photographic Education (SPE) Southwest Regional Conference on October 18th at 4:00PM at the Salt Lake Community College Visual Art & Design Department, 1575 S State Street Salt Lake City, UT, 84115 This year’s conference theme is A Collective Vision.
Temporary Container: Landscape of Loss
In the last 50 years, the rates of cremation in North America have risen dramatically. Because of the cost of burial and a more nomadic American population, cremation has become a popular alternative to traditional burial. In this series, I traveled to the most frequent locations where ashes are spread, raising questions about the importance of these places and the cultural and social implications that accompany them. In a culture where talk about the end of life is still largely taboo, I have discovered that people are dying to talk about death.
Presentation: Saturday October 18th, 4:00pm

Transuranic is an exploration of the various sites across the United States that ship radioactive waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Using video and photography, Hepner traced the routes that radioactive waste travels through public spaces before coming to New Mexico to rest for the next 10,000 years. Photographs of these locations were made into Uranotypes (an archaic photographic process invented in the 1850’s using Uranium, a radioactive element.) This work will be on display at the John Sommers Gallery September 15th through 25th.
